Simple Steps to Wash and Clean a Terry Velour Fabric Robe
What is velour? A plush, knitted fabric similar to velveteen or velvet, and is typically made from cotton. It provides a touch of sophistication and comfort to a range of products.
Pre-Washing Preparations
Step 1: Check the Robe’s Instructions on How It Should Be Washed
Before even using or washing the robe, especially when it’s new, check the care tags attached if the cloth can be machine washed or should be hand washed only. This is to make sure you won’t damage the fabric upon cleaning or washing it.
Step 2: Check and Remove Stains
After making sure you know how to correctly clean the Terry Velour robe, it’s always important to check if there are any stains on the cloth. If there are, pre-treat the stains to remove them.
Doing so will make sure it is completely clean after washing. Use a stain bar or stain solution as your cleaner and spot treat the stained areas.
If you are using a stain bar, wet it first before applying to the affected areas. Gently remove dirt by rubbing on the stains using a wet cleaning cloth, also making sure you remove the soap completely.
Wet the cloth as needed and repeat this process as necessary.
For the stain solution, place a few drops on the affected areas, depending on how large the stains are. Leave the solution on the cloth for a few minutes to allow enough time for it to soak through and work its magic.
Pre-soak velour fabric in cool water for 30 minutes to remove the odor of the solution. You can even mix ¼ cup of vinegar in the water to help remove the solution’s strong odor.

Step 3: Prep the Tub for Soaking the Fabric
Because this fabric is a delicate type, hand washing it might help you lower the chances of damage, as you have full control over the process. Prepare the tub where you’ll hand wash your robe and make sure it’s big enough to accommodate all the fabric.
Fill the tub with water. The recommended water temp often varies between cool to warm, so check the care tag thoroughly. Mix 1 tablespoon (or 15 ml) of detergent in the water and gently mix the solution with your hand to produce some bubbles.
Step 4: Soak Velour Fabric in the Water
Soaking the robe first in water before even rubbing it with your hands allows the solution to absorb into the cloth and work on getting rid of the dirt. Push the fabric deep into the water until it is completely submerged and leave it for 10 minutes.
If the cloth is really dirty, you can swirl it around in the tub for a minute or two before leaving it to help eliminate most of the dirt.
Additionally, gently agitating the cloth in the water can aid in loosening dirt and debris, allowing for more effective cleaning.
Step 5: Rub the Fabric with a Lightweight Cotton Cloth
Rubbing your Terry velour robe with a lightweight cotton cloth is the best way to actually clean it, as the cotton cloth effectively eliminates dirt without damaging the fabric. After making sure the detergent has already been absorbed in the fabric, gently rub the robe with the cotton cloth until you ensure it’s entirely clean.
Doing so will also make sure it will not flatten the fibers.
Have 2-3 extra cotton cloths on hand in case your robe is too large to be washed with just one cotton cloth (using the same one for too long might damage it).
Step 6: Rinse the Fabric with Water
Rinsing after rubbing the dirt off completes the process of washing the robe. Rinse the cloth under running water and drain the tub, making sure you wash the robe thoroughly to remove detergent.
Continue rinsing until the water runs clear.
Step 7: Remove Excess Moisture from the Cloth with a Towel
Removing excess moisture from the velour material with a clean bath towel is the proper way of handling the robe before hanging it. It’s not advisable to wring the fabric because it can damage it and flatten the fibers.
You may have to use old towels because it usually bleeds dye when it’s wet, which can stain the towel.
Step 8: Air Dry the Cloth
Air drying the fabric is the best way to let it dry properly. Hang the robe nicely using a clothesline or hanger to make sure it dries completely.
After several hours of hanging, check the cloth if it is completely dry. If not, flip the fabric and hang it again for several hours.

If The Tag Says Machine Wash…
Step 3: Put the Cloth in a Mesh Laundry Bag
After removing the stains and you’ve made sure the robe you have can be machine washed, it’s time you secure the cloth in a mesh laundry bag. Doing so will make sure velour fabric will not get damaged when machine washed.
It also protects the cloth from zippers, buttons, and clasps from your other clothes. Just simply fold the robe nicely into the mesh bag before including it into the group of clothes you’ll machine wash.
If you don’t have a mesh bag, you can use a cotton pillowcase as a cover to the fabric.
Step 4: Add Detergent to Your Washing Machine
Make sure you get a mild detergent to wash velour robe using a washing machine so it won’t hurt the fabric. Simply add a capful of the detergent to the machine and adjust the amount of soap according to the number of items you’ll wash.
It’s also essential to remember not to pour the detergent directly on the robe, especially if the soap has a green or blue color, as it can leave a stain on the fabric.
Step 5: Operate the Machine Based on the Instructed Settings
Set the washing machine on its normal cycle with the suggested water temp.
Just like hand washing the robe, the fabric can be machine washed in cold or warm water, depending on the instructions.
Step 6: Dry the Fabric in the Machine’s Dryer
Dry the fabric in the washing machine’s dryer on low heat to make sure it dries completely. This type of cloth is stronger than other types of velvet-like cloth, so it can stand up to time inside the dryer.
You can also opt for air drying by hanging it outside. It may take longer, but it’s much safer for the cloth.
Now that you know how to properly wash and clean Terry velour fabric, either through hand or machine wash, you’ll be confident you can remove the dirt and stains without damaging the robe. It’s still important to take note that the fabric is delicate though, so it needs extra care not just in washing but also in using them generally.
